Hana Studio Tips & Tricks: Lineage

Hana Studio Tips & Tricks: Lineage

SAP HANA
Graphical calculation views can be very complex – when a view consist of many nodes (joins, unions, projections), it is difficult to find what is the source (table, another view) of the field is. When you need to find the original value, which is common during troubleshooting, it is not convenient to click from node to node to find the source table or the source view. In such cases Show Lineage button is helpful. [caption id="attachment_140" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Enable Lineage for HANA Graphical View[/caption] The option is available on semantics (always the last component of calculation view). After activating Show Lineage button, the path for the selected field is marked in orange: Open view semantics. Select the field (line on right side). Click Show Linage. The path is marked like…

SAP HANA: using SQL for graphical views’ analysis

SAP HANA: using SQL for graphical views’ analysis

SAP HANA
In general, SAP HANA’s objects can be built using two different approaches: SQL language (SQL views, table functions, procedures); Graphical Blocks (graphical calculation views). Usage of graphical calculation views has some advantages (comparing to SQL objects): they are easier to maintain, the flow is more obvious and easy to understand, additionally it’s more convenient to change them and it’s very simple to show data in the intermediate steps (data preview option). On the other hand, using SQL objects gives the ability for an easy extension of the code in the console – you can always take part of SQL code, copy it to the console, modify, run and check the results. Fortunately, the same approach can be used together with graphical view – there is an SQL object behind every…

HANA Composite Provider – new column with constant value

HANA Composite Provider – new column with constant value

SAP BW, SAP HANA
Till BW 7.5 SP7, there is no obvious way to add new column with constant value in a BW on HANA composite provider. Let’s take the example: as a source for composite provider, you are using HANA view where one of Key Figures is Amount. The value is in EUR currency and because the currency field is not in HANA view, you would like to add it on the composite provider to see currency on the report later. How to do that? One option: create calculated column in view, set the constant EUR value for that column. It’s easy, but then you are storing one additional column which is not needed in view. Second option: create new currency column and assign constant value on composite provider. The way of achieving…

SAP Hana Studio: Data Preview

SAP Hana Studio: Data Preview

SAP HANA
Data Preview functionality allows users to check view results directly in HANA Studio. By default, just after selecting Data Preview – Raw Data, results data are displayed immediately. It can be inconvenient only when you are previewing huge data set or if you would like to filter data before previewing them. The default behavior of Data Preview can be changed in Window – Preferences – SAP HANA – Modeler – Data Preview – Execute the default query on data preview. If Execute the default query on data preview checkbox is not checked, when you select Data Preview – Raw Data, data will not be displayed immediately, but only after selecting Execute button. Before selecting Execute button you can apply filter on your data set, but be careful with Show list…

SAP HANA Transport for ABAP

SAP BW, SAP HANA
Keeping a consistent way of objects transportation is one of the challenges while using SAP BW on HANA. All classic BW objects, as well as HANA optimized BW objects (ADSOs, Composite Providers) are transported in BW transportation system. To keep integrity and consistent transportation queue,  SAP Hana Views can be transported in BW as well. This can be obtained in SCTS_HTA BW transaction. Having opened SCTS_HTA, SAP HANA package must be chosen. On the next screen, all views from chosen package are listed. Yellow triangle in Status column gives information that this particular view has been changed since the latest transport. To add selected HANA views to transport request, select views (first column) and click F8 / Clock Icon (Synchronize SAP HANA repository to ABAP). The selected views will be…

BEx Report: No applicable data found

SAP BW
When SAP BW on HANA is used, the ‘No applicable data found’ error in BEx can be seen quite often (even when data are inside the reporting object and should be visible). This error can occur when data into data store object in BW are loaded from SAP HANA data model through composite provider. The setup can be: Hana View - Composite Provider - Advanced DSO - BEx report. When model like in above example is used, SIDs for loaded data are not created and that’s the reason for no applicable data found error in BEx report. Fortunately it can be easily solved by using BW RSRV transaction, with test Foreign key relationship of reporting-relevant DataStore object and SID table characteristics test. In the test the data source must be chosen (ADSO)…
