Free HANA on SAP Cloud Platform

If you would like to use SAP HANA in the cloud for free, for example to create your own HANA applications or just to learn HANA, there is a great option from SAP. You can start your HANA with no time restrictions. The only one thing to remember is that when the free HANA DB opened in Cloud Platform is not used for 2 weeks, the DB will be deleted.

Starting SAP Cloud Platform

First thing to do is to open free trial of SAP Cloud Platform. Official SAP tutorial Sign up for a free trial account on SAP Cloud Platform is located here:

In a nutshell, to start you own SAP Cloud Platform:

  1. Open SAP HANA Cloud Platform Trial website:
  2. Click Register, register your user, receive e-mail and activate your account.
  3. Login to your account.

Starting HANA DB

When you SAP Cloud Platform is ready, you can start you HANA DB.

  1. Login to HANA Cloud platform.
  2. Select Neo Trial option.
  3. Go to SAP HANA / SAP ASE, select Database & Schemas and start new database.
  4. Set the name for your DB, type password (at least 15 characters). You will need the password to connect to your DB.
  5. Wait till you HANA database is created.

It can take up to half an hour. You can always check the log of DB creation in Events tab.
When the DB creation is over, status of your DB should be STARTED.

Your HANA DB is ready to be used.

When the HANA DB is up and running, you can log in to SAP HANA Cockpit and SAP HANA Web-Based Development Workbench.

SAP HANA Cockpit

SAP HANA cockpit provides a single point of access to a range of tools for administration and detailed monitoring of multiple, individual and tenant SAP HANA databases. It also integrates the SQL development capabilities required by administrators.

To login to cockpit:

  1. In SAP Cloud Platform Cockpit, go to your Neo Trial.
  2. Click on Databases & Schemas.
  3. Click on your HANA DB Name.
  4. Click on SAP HANA Cockpit. Login details:
    • Username: SYSTEM
    • Password: the one set during DB creation

After login, you should see the SAP HANA Cockpit.

SAP HANA Web-Based Development Workbench

SAP Cloud Platform provides the SAP HANA Web-based Development Workbench that you can use to build and test development artifacts in the SAP HANA environment.

To access Web-Based Development Workbench:

  1. In SAP Cloud Platform Cockpit, go to your Neo Trial.
  2. Click on Databases & Schemas.
  3. Click on your HANA DB Name.
  4. Click on SAP HANA Web-Based Development Workbench.
  5. Login using you SYSTEM account (and create new user in SAP HANA Cockpit – Manage Roles and Users.

In Editor you can create HANA views, table functions (like in Modeler perspective of HANA Studio). In Catalog, you can see DB tables. SAP HANA Web-Based Development Workbench can be used in the same way like SAP HANA Studio (Eclipse based).
